Klema - The Atlantic drifter

Project Klema has been reworked into project Phoenix. Since I was not able to acquire small, yet powerful solar panel to charge Klema's battery fast enough, I have decided to recycle the components into a balloon-launched glider. Check out the APRS tracked smart glider Phoenix.

Klema is a buoy designed to drift around the Atlantic and follow (hopefully) the Gulf stream. It is equipped with GPS, temperature sensors, solar panel and a 2 meter ham radio to relay its position and telemetry via APRS. It will be released off the Miami coast sometime in February of 2013. The buoy has been named after my late grandmother.

Closing notes

The buoy is nearing its completion and will be entering full testing stage soon. I'd like to get few words out regarding the components: be careful when buying things from China. My progress was delayed greatly by failing, cheap parts I purchased from behind the Great Wall (via eBay). I went through 3 solar controllers before I found one that actually worked (imagine how much time was lost; I had to wait at leat 3 weeks for each of them to arrive only to be disappointed). The solar panels were also underperforming and thus I had to shop around to find one that did fit my requirements.

Housing

Pelikan 1150 - waterproof plastic case.

APRS & GPS module

TinyTrack 4 - APRS tracker supplied by HB9DWS.

Sensors

TMP36 - low voltage, precision centi-grade temperature sensor.

Radio

16 channel 7W 2m HT - programmed frequencies 144.390, 145.825, 144.800.

Antenna

Surecom SC951 - 144, 430, 1200 MHz antenna.

Solar panel

2× 1.5W polycrystalline solar panel - 20.5V-16.6V 100mA epoxy covered panel.

Charge controller

10A solar charge controller - charges battery and protects against over-charge and under-voltage.

Battery

Panasonic 12V 3.4Ah 20HR LC-R123R4PG - gel lead acid battery.
